School Programs Hamilton Middle School prides itself on the amount of programs it has available to its students. One of our primary goals is to achieve a high rate of student connectedness. We feel that the more students are connected to the school, the more pride they will have in the school. Please select a link to the left to see all the different opportunities Hamilton students have to get connected with the school. • Reading programs: Rec Read, Read 180, Extreme Literacy, Advanced Skills L.A. • Math programs include Math Intervention, Math in the Middle, Pre-Algebra, Algebra Tutoring Program: We offer free tutoring, after school, Monday through Thursday from 3:20pm to 5:00pm.
• AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is an essential part
of the curriculum in the 2007-08 school year. AVID is an in-school academic
support program for grades 5-12 that prepares students for college eligibility
and success. It places academically average students in advanced classes. AVID
levels the playing field for minority, rural, low-income and other students
without a college-going tradition in their families. AVID is for all students,
but it targets those in the academic middle. AVID is implemented schoolwide and
districtwide. AVID isn't a remedial program, a free ride, a niche program,and
AVID isn't a college outreach program.
• Autistic Program: The categorical autism program at Hamilton Middle School is
based on the structured teaching model and is designed primarily for 6th, 7th
and 8th grade students with autism who are in need of a functional curriculum.
In an effort to support the development of independent functioning skills,
Hamilton staff members and the student body have welcomed students with autism
into inclusive classroom settings for instruction in Computers, Band, Art, AR,
Science, PE and Math. Program goals for teaching socialization skills and
fostering positive peer relationships have been met through a highly successful
peer-mentoring program between the students with autism and Leadership students.
Hamilton Middle School is a great place for students with autism to continue to
develop the skills necessary for becoming life-long learners!
• ESOL Program: The ESOL program at Hamilton started in the 2005-06 school year.
By opening an ESOL program at Hamilton, many of our English Language Learners (ELLs)
are now able to go to their neighborhood school without being bussed to another
location for services. We continue to do staff development with teachers and
work hard to include all our families in the many wonderful programs at
Hamilton.
• Mentoring Program: For 2007-08, Hamilton is excited to offer a new mentoring
program to students through their Consortium class. Research has shown that
mentoring helps young people make positive changes in their lives. Students who
have mentors are likely to have a higher graduation rate, improved grades and
school attendance, and a significant decrease in negative behaviors. Students in
this class will have the opportunity for field trips; listen to guest speakers,
and to practice reading strategies through individualized reading. Students will
be grouped based on common interests. Students will meet with their mentors
everyday, parents will meet with the mentor at conferences, and together we will
work to empower our students to achieve their personal and educational goals.
• Student Coaching Program: For 2007-08 we will be offering a program new to
middle schools called “Student Coaching”. It has had great success in several
high schools and we will be joining Marshall as one of the first middle schools
to initiate the program. The program is designed for highly responsible and
respectful students to be assigned to a particular core classroom where they
would serve as an academic coach to students. These “student coaches” would not
be proctors (grade papers, make copies, etc) but actually work with students to
help them succeed. They would receive weekly training by a teacher who would
educate them on coaching techniques, classroom etiquette, and tutoring skills.
The student coaches will be 8th grade students and they will receive weekly
training by a teacher and will be graded based on their work as a “coach”. We
learn best when we teach it so not only will this program be helpful to the
students being coached but also to the coaches themselves as they teach and
practice academic skills in the classroom.
• Support Staff: At Hamilton we have Support Staff that can help students
improve their behavior, academics and attendance and provide parents with
resources and volunteer opportunities. Our programs include Communities In
Schools (CIS), Campus Connections, Truancy Program and Parent Involvement. • Communities In Schools (CIS) program is to champion the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. In addition to providing services for the family and increasing parental involvement, CIS offers student tutoring, mentoring, individual/group counseling and health services. It serves as a neutral bridge between the school system and community resources.
Truancy Program is to provide a community response to the issues of truancy at
Hamilton Middle School. Truancy is the first indicator that a young person is
giving up and losing his or her way. The program’s goal is to promote increased
school attendance, academic achievement and parent/teacher involvement. If a
student is truant or shows the possibility of truancy, the Hamilton Middle
School CIS Staff, Registrar/Attendance Clerk, Truancy Coordinators, School
Resource Officer, and School Nurse are all available to facilitate action.
Com Care/Campus Connection has joined Hamilton to provide professional support
for students with counseling needs. They also provide family support during
crisis times when it helps to have someone to help make emergency calls for
support. Their services are billed to Medicaid or to private insurance companies
so their service to the individual is provided at a minimal cost. Their services
are especially helpful for students needing temporary support with personal or
family problems.
JROTC Leadership Program: All 6th graders are required to take this leadership
class. This class emphasizes virtues and helps students with organization,
discipline, leadership, respect and community service. This is not a recruitment
class for the armed service. Athletics: Only seventh and eighth graders can compete in Inter-Scholastic Athletics, but sixth graders can participate in the After School Intramurals that we offer for all grade levels in volleyball, basketball and soccer.
After School Program: The Wichita YMCA and Wichita Public Schools offer
the Middle School - After School Program. The After-School program keeps
our youth in a safe environment while providing home and tutoring time during
the first 45 minutes, followed by enrichment and recreational activities. Our
program operates September 17th through December 13th and January 15th through
May 1st. It is open Monday - Thursday (No program on Fridays) The program
runs from the time school is dismissed until 5:00pm. It is not open on
days when school is closed, including holidays, in-service days, and inclement
weather days. Some late bus transportation is available Royal Dads: Fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, and other father figures volunteer in a variety of school activities to help create a more safe and secure learning environment at Hamilton. Las Chicas: Any girl who attends Hamilton may join "Las Chicas." Las Chicas promotes educational, cultural and personal development. In order for the girls to be a member they must be a student in good standing. Activities include guest speakers and field trips. Parents must also participate in the activities.
